My Piano Lessons

I teach piano lessons, sight reading and playing  by ear, music theory, improvisation, digital recording and audio editing. I deliver accelerated yet quality piano learning experience to my students. Lessons are cost effective and enjoyable!

I aim to build enjoyable and fulfilling experience for my students. While music is fun to listen to and play, the process of learning music requires discipline and work. My teaching is designed to:

  • provide students with the positive attitude and encouragement they need for the long process of developing piano techniques, and

  • cultivate the mindfulness and sensitivity of students to bring out the intrinsic beauty in music.

For grade-schoolers to teenagers (5+):

The goal is to help everyone become an independent, well-rounded musician who is proficient at playing and creating music. Each lesson builds upon the last, and follows consistent steps and standards to develop students into virtuoso classical pianists.

Every lesson will be built on sight reading, ear training and physical/technical development. As students advance, lessons will start including music theory, music history, improvisation and composition.

I incorporate solfège system at the start of each young student’s music training. Solfège is normally not taught until young instrumentalists are in college level music programs. However, I believe learning solfège is similar to learning a second language - the earlier, the better and easier it will be. Students who master the solfège system:

  1. Accelerate their sight-reading, which makes playing sheet music more enjoyable.

  2. Train their ears accurately. It will become second nature for the student to translate any song he/she hears to solfège, and play it on the piano without hesitation.

  3. Build their inner “musician’s ear”. By just reading sheet music, the student will already have the sound in his/her head and can sing it immediately.

For adult students with various goals:

Your goals as a musician are valued and respected! We will work together to breakdown your long-term goals into achievable lessons that will facilitate your learning. Some topics which I am assisting my current adult students with include:

  • improvisation

  • composition

  • learning their long-term favorite pieces

  • learning their favorite genres, rock, pop or classical etc

  • learning to accompany for church choir

As an adult student you are not required to know how to read music to begin lessons. We will work together to explore and design a tailored lesson plan for achieving your unique goals. Students are always encouraged to bring special requests and challenges, even if they require non-traditional way of teaching!

I teach in both English and Chinese.

Seeing the excitement of students and their families as they improve over time is priceless! It sparks my enthusiasm and the desire to share knowledge with more people. I strive to provide the best environment for learning to my students each and every day!
